The metal building roof style contributes significantly to the aesthetics and durability of your structure. It is one of the most important parts of a metal building.

Selecting the right roof style stands as one of the most critical decisions in the process of designing your metal building. It can either safeguard your Texas metal buildings against various elements or leave it vulnerable to damage.

In this article, we will explore the several types of roofs available for your Texas metal building: Standard Roof, A-Frame Horizontal, and A-Frame Vertical, each offering its own set of uniqueness and advantages.

Standard Roof Style

Key Features:

  • Also know as the Regular Roof
  • Simple and Cost Effective
  • Quick Installation Process

WolfSteel Buildings does not hold any rights over the pictures shown in standard roof style.

The Standard Roof Style, often called the regular roof, is a simple and cost-effective choice. This style is characterized by its curved edges and horizontal oriented panels that span from one side to the other.

The installation process is relatively quick, making it a practical choice for various projects. This roof style is the standard, hence the name, across the tubular metal building industry. This roof is included on all quotes unless an upgraded option is selected.

The Standard Roof presents itself as a budget-friendly choice. However, it is not designed to withstand high winds and heavy snow loads. This is due to the orientation of the panels, which does not allow the snow to run off.

This roof style does not have additional framing on the roof called hat channels. The lack of these hat channels lowers the pounds per square foot (PSF) allowed on the roof. Due to these limitations, this metal building roof style is suitable for areas with moderate weather conditions and limited snowfall.

What does WolfSteel Think?

  • We only recommend standard roofs for small projects under 400 sq ft. They are a great cost-effective option. WolfSteel Does not offer the standard roof style. Our recommendations are based on experience from previous industry and company knowledge.
  • The downside is that horizontal panels on the roof tend to hold water, debris, ice, and snow compared to the vertical option. This is due to the horizontal orientation of the ridges running from side to side or front to back.
  • Horizontal roof buildings over 31 feet in length are prone to leaking due to the overlapping of the panels. The longest panels cut are 31′ which means anything over this length will need to have overlapping panels that can increases the chances of leaking.

A-Frame Horizontal Roof Style

Key Features:

  • Also know as the Boxed Eave Roof
  • Aesthetically appealing compared to Standard Roof
  • Affordable and simpler installation process than vertical roof

WolfSteel Buildings does not hold any rights over the pictures shown in A-Frame horizontal roof style.

The A-Frame Horizontal Roof Style, also known as the Boxed Eave Roof, offers an improved aesthetic appeal compared to the Standard Roof. This style incorporates A-frame trusses with roof panels oriented horizontally. These panels run parallel to the Texas metal building’s sides and have a standard 6″ overhang, providing additional coverage.

The cost of implementing a horizontal roof style is more affordable, and its installation is simpler when compared to a vertical roof. The cost to implement can range from $100 to $700, depending on the length and width of the building.

This metal building roof style is well-suited for regions with gentler climates, where heavy snow or storms are not common occurrences, making it most suitable for smaller structures.

Furthermore, horizontal panels may cause water to accumulate between the ridges, potentially resulting in problems like rust and leaks. This occurs due to the orientation of the panels, hindering the easy runoff of snow.

Additionally, the lack of hat channels has decreased the PSF (pounds per square foot) allowance. While snow is not very common in Texas, it is gradually becoming an issue to consider.

What does WolfSteel Think?

  • While we do prefer the appearance of the A-Frame Horizontal over the Standard Horizontal Roof, the main difference is in aesthetics rather than performance. WolfSteel Does not offer the A-Frame horizontal roof style. Our recommendations are based on experience from previous industry and company knowledge.
  • The downside is that horizontal panels on the roof tend to hold water, debris, ice, and snow compared to the vertical option. This is due to the horizontal orientation of the ridges running from side to side or front to back.
  • Horizontal roof buildings over 31 feet in length are prone to leaks due to the overlapping of the panels. So, to cover a 40-foot length, you have to overlap two 20-foot panels, which can result in potential leaks.

A-Frame Vertical Roof Style

Metal Building A-Frame Vertical Roof Style

Key Features:

  • Robust and Versatile
  • Provides tight, leak-proof, and seamless bond due to the vertical panel.
  • Allows efficient runoff of rain, snow, and debris.

The A-Frame Vertical Roof Style represents the most robust and versatile option. This style features A-frame trusses paired with vertically oriented roof panels.

The design of the panels was engineered and created to overlap in a vertical orientation, creating a tight, leak-proof, seamless bond. This is by far the only recommended roof style for larger projects, residential homes, and commercial applications.

We don’t have anything on how the A-Frame vertical roof style has hat channels creating that checked board look under the panels. This is what gives it its strength which makes this design efficient runoff of rain, snow, and debris. Hence, making it an excellent choice for regions with heavy precipitation.

Tubular Metal Building with 3/12 Roof Pitch

Vertical gabled roofs are available in various pitches including 3/12, 4/12, 5/12, and 6/12.

The efficient drainage and reduced debris accumulation contribute to the extended lifespan of the roof and your entire Texas metal  building.

What does WolfSteel Think?

  • The A-Frame Vertical style may come with a higher cost compared to the other two metal building roof styles, but it undoubtedly stands as the strongest and most robust choice available in the metal building  industry.

  • Moreover, the benefits of opting for the A-Frame Vertical Roof extend beyond its strength. You’ll experience the advantage of minimal maintenance, optimal durability, and a heightened aesthetic quality that elevates the overall look of your Texas metal building.
